Fulbright Under Fire: Co-opting and Defunding International Educational Exchanges
Congress created the Fulbright Program after WWII to promote international understanding and prevent future wars. Until recently, the 79-year old nonpartisan program operated independently and included exchanges with 160 countries. Under the current administration, it is being challenged with partisan interference and delays and cuts in allocated funding. This presentation will discuss the history of the Fulbright Program, grants previously and currently available, the selection process, and the importance of international exchanges for defending American democracy.
Mary Stanton taught in Delhi, India, through the Fulbright Teacher Exchange Program, and taught as a Fulbright alumna volunteer in Hanoi, Vietnam and Chiang Mai, Thailand. She has served for the past 10 years on the board of the Minnesota chapter of the Fulbright Association, and currently serves as its Director of Philanthropy and Advocacy. Previously, she served six years on the board of the national association, including as secretary and chair of the Fulbright Association Travel Program.
