Watch, Learn and Take Action — The Building of American Detention Centers: Profit, Power & Civil Rights

Thursday, March 12 @ 10:00 am - 11:30 am

Join us for the LWV Edina March meeting as we watch and discuss a video presentation by Professor Kari Hong, Ninth Circuit Attorney at the Florence Immigrant and Refugee Rights Project (presentation was originally made to LWV Women Defending Democracy). Professor Hong will provide a clear account of the unprecedented nationwide surge in for-profit detention centers, driven by DHS quotas, and resulting in substandard, inhumane conditions and devastating effects on civil and human rights.
Professor Hong recommends four actions that attendees will be welcome to take immediately following the presentation.

Professor Hong has represented more than 250 people before the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals and was invited by the Court to serve on the Ninth Circuit Rules Committee. Her analysis and commentary has appeared in numerous publications and been featured in national outlets including the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Washington Post, SCOTUS Blog, and CNN. She grew up in Northfield, Minnesota, is a graduate of Swarthmore College and Columbia Law School, and served 10 years as a tenured professor of law at Boston College.

Gathering and Social at 9:45 a.m. followed by Presentation and Discussion at 10 a.m. This event is free and open to the public. Please register: https://forms.gle/RTJesqMj4KYUNdLD8.
