What Does League Have to Say About Firearms? Evening Event

January 13, 2022 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

The League of Women Voters of Minnesota (LWVMN) and LWVUS both have positions on firearms [read LWV MINNESOTA’S
PROGRAM FOR ACTION (2019-2021) pp. 36-37]. LWV Edina welcomes all to learn more about the positions and a proposed update. At the end of the meeting, LWVE members only may vote on update recommendations.

As a political nonpartisan organization, LWV never endorses, supports, or opposes a political party or candidate for office, but does take positions on vital issues of concern to members and the public, and advocates for those positions.

LWV requires that positions be based on careful study and consensus by LWV members. The LWVMN position, adopted in 1990, was based on study and report by a committee of Leaguers, published as:  The Sale, Use, and Possession of Firearms in Minnesota (January 1990).

LWVMN is seeking to update its position. An update study was authorized at the 2019 LWVMN Convention. The study committee will publish its report in Fall 2021, and, continuing into Winter 2022, committee members will present their findings to local Leagues throughout Minnesota. Presentations will focus on research, statistics, and strategies to reduce firearms death. Following time for discussion at each meeting, LWV members will vote on consensus on the committee’s update recommendations.

All are welcome to attend to hear the presentation and participate in discussion, but only LWV members can vote.

Read a little history of the study.

Speakers

LWVMN study committee members; Co-chairs Mary Lewis Grow (LWV Northfield) and Marti Micks (LWV Golden Valley)
